Say you run a med spa in Austin. You pay an SEO company every month. On the first, a PDF arrives with charts and a few arrows pointing up. Every week, one or two blog posts appear on your site. You skim the PDF, and you cannot tell what changed or whether it mattered.
That is a common setup, and some agencies do it very well. It is also worth comparing with a newer approach. Here is how we see the two, including where AI falls short.
What a typical agency package looks like
For many small businesses, an SEO package is a strategy call, one or two blog posts a week, a few technical fixes, and a monthly report.
The real strengths are human ones. A good strategist knows your market and can make a judgment call about where to focus. They can build relationships with local sites, handle outreach, and pitch a story to a local reporter. They can pick up the phone and explain things to you. If you have a bigger budget and want that kind of partner, it is worth paying for.
The weak spots are mostly about time. People bill by the hour, so a site and its competitors get checked on a schedule, often monthly. If a page breaks on the 3rd, it may sit there until the report. If a competitor launches a new service page on the 10th, you hear about it later, if at all.
As for the weekly blog posts, our view is that for a local service business they tend to matter less than people expect. A general post like "five tips for winter" rarely brings in a customer. Specific service pages, area pages, and a well-kept Google Business Profile usually do more.
What an AI SEO employee does differently
An AI SEO employee is set up and personalized for your business, then it works continuously. In Cynthara's $997 plan it:
- Watches your competitors and your site 24/7
- Makes updates: new service pages, fixes to existing pages, and Google Business Profile posts
- Is monitored by our team, who check what it did
- Feeds a live rankings and traffic dashboard you can open any time
The difference is mainly attention and speed. It does not check once a month, it checks all the time, and it can afford to do small things that a person would have to bill for: fix a broken page the day it breaks, notice when a competitor adds something new, keep your profile posting.
What AI cannot do
Here is the part vendors tend to skip. An AI SEO employee cannot:
- Earn you reviews. Customers have to write them, and you have to ask.
- Take photos of your work. It can use the ones you have. It cannot be at the job.
- Know what you have not told it. A new service, a price change, or the fact that you stopped doing gutters only reaches it if someone tells it.
- Build real-world relationships. A chamber of commerce listing, a sponsorship, or a mention from a supplier comes from people.
- Make business decisions. What to focus on this year is still your call.
- Always get things right. It can write an awkward sentence or lean on a claim you would not make. That is why humans review its work, and why we would not run it unchecked.
If anyone tells you AI makes human oversight unnecessary, be careful.
Questions to ask either one
Use the same questions for an agency, a freelancer, or an AI tool:
- What exactly will be done each month? Ask for a list.
- Who checks the work before it goes live?
- How quickly are things fixed when they break?
- Can I see the actual changes, not only a summary?
- Who owns the content, the domain, and the profile?
- What is the contract, and what happens if I leave?
The answers tell you more than any pitch.
Which one fits
- Choose an agency if you want a strategist, outreach, PR, or brand work, and you have a marketing budget and someone to manage it.
- Choose an AI SEO employee if you are a local service business that wants the ongoing work done quickly and transparently, with people checking it, alongside your website, leads, and phone coverage in one place.
- Keep your agency if you already have one you trust and can see what they do. Nothing here says to switch.
Whichever you pick, give it enough time. We explain why in why local SEO takes three months, which is also the reason our $997 plan is billed quarterly. If your goal is to be mentioned when someone asks an AI assistant for a local recommendation, how to show up in AI search answers goes deeper.
